Re[2]: Olive growers battle tiny pest

With regard to MFF, Dick Taylor at Ag WA may be able to shed some light on the
prevalence and type of damage caused on olive fruit in WA.

In NSW we have had similar problems to those you described, caused by Queensland
fruit fly. In one case in Northern NSW, Qfly caused damage to about 80% of
kalamata fruit in an orchard, effectively destroying the crop. Adult female Qfly
"stings" the fruit to lay eggs. The eggs hatch and maggots burrow into the
fruit. Olive fruit is not big enough to sustain the Qfly maggots to maturity, so
they do not survive, hence olives are not considered a host for Qfly.

The "sting" looks like a pin prick on the surface of the fruit, surrounded by
discolouration, and is easy to see. I have a photograph of fruit Qfly stings on
an olive if this is of use.

In the case where the fruit is stung, but no egges are layed, fruit fly
introduce bacteria which cause rapid onset of fruit rot, so even if no eggs are
laid the the fruit is still rendered useless for pickling or oil production.

Control can be difficult if Qfly numbers are high. Qfly will infest a wide range
of fruit crops and numbers can build up in untended back yard fruit trees.

Control strategies include, monitoring fly numbers using traps, bait spraying,
ground sprays, and release of sterile males.

There are a number of agfacts produced by QDPI and NSW Ag on control of
Queensland fruit fly, Ag WA may have similar on MFF.

Regards

Damian

Regarding the olive fly. Talkingg to Carlo Costa when he was in Perth,
he indicated that if wild olives are around, then the olive fly is not
such a problem. Olive Fly has not been reported in Australia.

Does anyone have a good photo of the Olive Fly preferably sitting on an
olive?
I would like to get a copy. I am willing to pay towards the cost.

Today I had an enquiry about Mediterranean Fruit Fly - a grower last
season had harvested the olive and processed them for eating. When the
prescribed curing time was completed, he found the olives to be soft and
inedible. He cut some open and found damaged flesh due to a "worm" which
he thought was Mediterranean Fruit Fly and hence his enquiry. I have had
several of these reports but I have never seen the fruit.

Does MFF attack olives, what are the sighns and symptoms and how can the
problem be mannaged.

<pre>Dear Stan

I will email the Qfly sting picture. For identification the NSW Ag web site has
an identification key, agnotes and descriptions of various fruit flies. go to
www.agric.nsw.gov.au , click on the pests and diseases icon, then click on
"pests" and then "Queensland fruit fly". This will bring up links to an Agnote,
pictorial list of species and identification key.

A search on Queensland Department of Primary Industries will also yield
information on various fruit flies. www.dpi.qld.gov.au
