Workshop with Vicki Younger of Redgum Soaps - Sunday 9 September
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>STOGA (Southern Tablelands Olive Growers Association) has arranged for Vicki Younger of Redgum Soaps to do a workshop on soaps. You may think you are not interested in this side of production, however, Prof Stan Kailis advised that there is always a time when you produce some "lamp oil" and this will either have to be filtered and used in margarine or whatever, or used for "lamp oil". Soap would appear to be an attractive "whatever" and this is your opportunity to learn about soaps. Vicki produces Castile Soap made with 100% pure olive oil. It is either unscented or scented with essential oil. She also has a range of, shampoo, shaving soap, face & body moisurisers, massage oils, cold pressed base oils and essential oils. Date : Sunday 9th September 2001 Time : 2.00 pm Venue : Yowani Golf Club - junction of Federal and Barton Highways, Lyneham, ACT Cost : $5.00 per person to cover tea/coffee and biscuits RSVP : By Friday 7th September 2001 - Beryl Petersen - email: tom_beryl@bigpond.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] </pre> </td></tr></table> |

<pre>EVO has less tha 1% free fatty acid Poorer quality olive oils have more free acid and hence less desired. When making soap the triglycerides in the oil are broken down to free fatty acids that react with the alkali to make the soap if Sodoim hydroxide is used the reaction is Triglyceride = Water --->Free fatty acids + Sodium Hydroxide ---> Sodium oleate(soap) So free fatty acids are also converted to soap ie no disadvantage. When I delve in the past when I was making soaps - I found potassium hydroxide gave a better quality soap. Potassium Oleate rather than sodium oleate. Stan Kailis </pre> </td></tr></table> |

<pre>From: Stan Kailis <kailis@ca.com.au> Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 00:09:29 +0000 When I delve in the past when I was making soaps - I found potassium hydroxide gave a better quality soap. Potassium Oleate rather than sodium oleate. This is a very interesting statement. KOH makes liquid soap. NaOH makes bar soap. You can't compare them directly. Which you prefer depends on what you want the final product to be. I'm getting lovely soaps from both (I make both bar and liquid soaps).
