Olive Oil Finally Joins the Carton Generation

<pre>Olive Oil Finally Joins the Carton Generation

Being a lover of olive oil in dark green bottles or ceramic jugs, and
somewhat conservative, I admit to being startled to read this squib in the NY
Times food section yesterday. But I'll give it a try, as I live near a
Fairway market in Manhattan.

Arte Oliva, a warmly herbaceous extra virgin olive oil from Spain, is a
packaging pioneer. Its liter box is lighter than a liter bottle and protects
the oil from light, which can cause it to spoil. It is packaged without
oxygen, another cause of spoilage.

Snip off the corner seal and a little pouring spout is created. This olive
oil is suitable for many uses and has a modest price, $6.99. It is sold at
Fairway markets.

<pre>NOBODY, is attracted to a milk carton or anything else packaged in
cardboard. According to ancient wisdom we should package ourselves and our
products as if they were from ROYALTY.
DO YOU WANT TO POUR OLIVE OIL FROM A MILK CARTON?
I should not do business on Shabbat but I will until I get married! Look at
my website!!! www.isRoilOliveOil.com There will be an Olive Oil Tasting on
Wed, Februrary 6th at Shorewood Nightclub in Fridley MN. Address is: HWY 694
& CENTRAL. (USA)

<pre>This carton is made from plastic, not cardbard, according to the original NY
Times story. The point is to cut down on light and oxygen affecting the oil.
That the rectangular plastic cartons are lighter and less expenaive to ship
may make this a wave or the future for less expensive oil. If it becomes
popular, we'll undoubtedly have studies on the transfer of plastic compounds
to the oil, though I don't think this is likely as the oil is not heated on
the container and plastic jugs have long been used for other oils.

Before good olive oil became widely available in the U.S., I used to go to
Little Italy in NYC to buy olive oil in rectangular gallon metal cans, then
transfer it to empty cognac bottles.
